Ai Yori Aoshi
Vendor: Pioneer
DVD Authoring: ?
Nitpick 1:Some people observe major banding on some gradients.
Workaround: a good player with a reputably good MPEG decoder, noise reduction, resampling and good 10 bit video DACs should minimize it. Panasonic XP30, XP50, CP72 and RP82 and Denon DVD-1600 are the best bets right now, they all share Matsushita's best DVD decoder.
Discs Affected: All volume 2s
Players Affected: all
Severity: 2-3
Nitpick 2:The image in volume 2 is blurred or smudged vertically. Take a close look at these samples: Shot 1, volume 1 Shot 1, volume 2 Shot 2, volume 1 Shot 2, volume 2 The images from the second volume are certainly blurrier than those in the first volume.
Workaround: none.
Discs Affected: Volume 2
Players Affected: all
Severity: 3

DVD Authoring: ?
Problem 1:At 1:08:55 there is a slight jump on some players. This is likely a layer switch.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: ?
Players Affected: ?
Severity: 1
Problem 2:Won't play on certain players, sometimes immediately ejecting the disc. If this affects you, try the second Utena DVD or Disney's Dinosaur and see if it gives you the same reaction. Let me know the results.
Workaround: Try cleaning the disc or contacting Pioneer, their info should be in the package somewhere.
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: The JVC XV-501BK was reported twice, the JVC XV-701BK, JVC XV-1000, JVC XV-D2000 and PS2 are also noted once.
Severity: If ya can't even play it... 5
Nitpicks:This release isn't 100% progressive encoded like it could have been, and it also has edge enhancement.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: Akira movie-only, Akira Special Edition and Akira DTS, all R1
Players Affected: progressive scan players
Severity: unsure
Recalled: no. So far these aren't recall worthy yet.

I believe both the SE and normal movie-only release have the identical movie discs, except for the silkscreen.
