Super Dimension Fortress Macross
Vendor: AnimEigo
DVD Authoring: AnimEigo?
Nitpick 1:The music and effects tracks are separated into left and right channels, with the music on the left, effects on the right..
Workaround: "There were separate mono reels for the effects & music so they're recorded on separate channels, just for the fun of it -S.K. Shin Kurokawa Producer, AnimEigo, Inc." This was posted on the "Glitch Disc" Forum.
Nitpick 2:Most of the rest of the extras are hidden as easter eggs, not obviously accessable through the menu and not called out on the packaging.
Workaround: go here to find the easter eggs.

OK folks, these aren't big problems. In all it appears that aside from rumors of grain added to the video, and a handful of artifacts, this set was very well made, with very minimal problems, technical, compatibility wise, most of them are just nitpicks. I just want to make people aware that these problems aren't technical faults but authoring decisions. I don't think the first is that bad, this way I can listen to just the background music for the show.

Macross Plus, DVD volumes 1 & 2
Vendor: Palm Pictures / Manga Entertainment
Problem 1:On the early versions, the subtitle timings were off at the end of episode 4, the 5.1 English audio was missing the center channel data
Workaround: Exchange the DVDs.
Discs Affected: all "first pressing" discs
Players Affected: Not a player issue.
Severity:
Recalled: yes, but the official trade-in deadline has lapsed. Contact Manga Entertainment to check if they will still exchange them
Last Updated: 2000 Dec 25

The replacement announcement at the Anime on DVD site. Click here to find a way to identify the correct version. I don't like the referral as first or second pressing, as there is no way of knowing there was only one pressing of the original production master, but that's how it has become known.

Magic Knights Rayearth
Vendor: AnimeWorks / Media Blasters
Problem 1:The Omake endings and some special features are innaccessable. It affects about fifteen seconds of footage on the first three discs, I believe it also affects the alternate opening theme and the alternate ending theme, and those are at least a minute long.
The DVD time stamp / counter is not used.
The menu is very slow on some systems.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: Omake features: some - Toshiba 1200, SD-2109; Panasonic A310; Yamaha S-700; but not my my Pioneer DVL-700. Note that this is not an exhaustive list.
Missing time counter: all
Severity: 3
Recalled: no
Last Updated: 3/24/2001

Media Blasters has acknowledged the missing time counters on their discs. It should be fixed on future discs they release, but no word on what is already released, I really don't consider worth fixing unless something else is wrong too.

Magic Users Club volume 2
Vendor: Media Blasters
DVD Authoring: ?
Problem 1:A line in episode 3 appears to be either mistimed or unsubbed. If mistimed the delay is about 3 seconds or so.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: all of volume 2
Players Affected: all
Severity: 3

Magical Play
Vendor: ADV Films
DVD Authoring:
Problem 1: In episode 2, segment called "The Garden of Doinans" the announcer goes on to say how this match was so important to the magical girls and the history behind them... is completely missing from the dub. Time index range 17:20 to 17:45 is affected.
Workaround: Turn on the subs to read the explaination. I should have written it down, but I didn't.
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: not a player issue

Mahoromatic
Vendor: Pioneer
DVD Authoring: ?
Nitpick 1:On volume 2, chapter 12 is empty and chapter 11 contains both "Satellite Poem" and "Preview of 7th episode". This means you can not jump to "Preview of 7th episode" from menu - you'll get opening of 7th episode instead.
Workaround: use the >> and << buttons to see the segment you want to watch.
Discs Affected: volume 2
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: low

Thanks to "Khimenko Victor" for pointing this out.

Maison Ikkoku
Vendor: Viz Video
DVD Authoring: ?
Problem 1:One owner with a Samsung 511 reported that the lanuguage menu on discs 2 and 3 locks up the player. So far it is an isolated case with one report, but if you too are affected, please let me know.
Workaround: no. The fact that the audio and subtitle buttons locked out the normal workaround does not help, adding injury to insult.
Discs Affected: volumes 2 & 3
Players Affected: only Samsung 511 so far.
Severity: 5 for owners that are affected
Nitpick 1:The audio and subtitle buttons are locked out, the audio and subtitle tracks cannot be changed while the video is playing.
Workaround: Go to the menu
Discs Affected: set 1
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: highly annoying
Nitpick 2:There are no real timecodes encoded into the disc. DVD players with "resume" functions won't be able to.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: set 1
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: medium
Nitpick 3:As reported by TAS, the DVD does not respect the player's language preferences.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: set 1
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: medium
Nitpick 4:In the episode listings on each disc, they are numbered as they appear on the disc, they aren't the episode number as they fit in the entire series. For example, the first episode of disc #2 is listed as episode #1, not as the fifth episode in the series.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: set 1
Players Affected: not a player issue
Severity: low

If any of these problems affect you, I urge you to write Viz Video or ask their reps at a convention to put time codes in and to never lock out a DVD player's buttons. Might as well ask for complying with player language preferences too.

Miami Guns
Vendor: AN Entertainment
DVD Authoring:
Problem 1:I counted seven times when a subtitle would only appear for a very short part of a second and then disappears. No chance to read it or to pause at the time. Usually it's a long subtitle following after a short one and the long, disappearing one contains an explanation or something like that.

1st episode:
5:53: Ridiculous! Who called that in without my permission?
6:36: Showing up late and aggravating the robber with your crazy performance!

2nd episode:
8:26: I'm looking forward to your continuing success in the police force in the future.
12:18: As the city grew larger, the amount of crime in the city increased.

3rd episode:
8:39: My brain isn't anything to be proud of but my muscles definitely are!
10:12: Without women, there are romantic problems among the male soldiers.

4th episode: 12:25: You hunted down a man and sent him to the hospital, but he isn't the criminal!

Workaround: ?
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: Noted on Pioneer DV-440, DV-545 and a few others.
Severity: annoying
Nitpick 1: There are some scrambled up subtitles in Miami Guns, around the 20:00 of the first episode, when the tank is climbing the stairs. I think there are one or two other problems with Miami Guns.
Workaround: grin and bear it. It is still somewhat readable.

Thanks to Uzi for reporting these, ellone and martialstax for confirming, and AldenT of AN Entertainment for looking into it.

Moldiver
Vendor: Pioneer USA
Problem 1:By many reports the subtitles are basically the dub script and include the character name marks and sound effects notation that might be appropriate for an SDHH or CC track but is innappropriate for a subtitle of the original Japanese language.
Workaround: Either watch the dub, put up with it or use the scripts I captured from the Laserdisc here.
Discs Affected: ALL
Players Affected: this is not a player issue
Severity: 3
Recalled: no
Last Updated: May 21 2001

While this may or may not be a technical problem, it clearly shows that the master wasn't properly proofed by someone that knows Pioneer anime products, as the wrong subtitles were used when a proper subtitle track apparently exists on the LD releases of Moldiver.

Mononoke: Please see Princess Mononoke.
