Bugs on Anime DVDs: Miscellaneous

Insert catchy logo and mascot here. Any suggestions?

System Specific Bugs

This section is for discs that seem to only affect a small number of DVD players, of a specific model or firmware revision. I recommend checking with your player manufacturer for possible updates.

For now I am integrating them with the main bug list because I don't want to maintain two separate lists of bugs on some titles.

Unconfirmed Bugs

I have this section so that I can at least post it even if I've never read about the problem. Please do not be offended by my listing a particular submission here, I cannot have someone read this as gospel, but yet I don't want to leave it undisclosed.

This has been discontinued for now, I'll try to note the unconfirmed reports in the main lists.

Typical / Common Problems

Video: Rainbows - the appearance of color streaks from a diagonal line, a result of using a poor comb filter which didn't properly separate the color signal from the black and white signal. It is generally noticed on thin diagonal lines. Trigun is most noted for this problem, although it is on many more releases than I care to remember. Solution: to mitigate this problem, turn down the sharpness on your TV as much as possible. This doesn't totally solve this issue but it helps a lot.

Video: "Curlies" - a result of using too few "bits" to encode an JPEG/MPEG type picture where there isn't enough information encoded to acceptably re-assemble the image. This is also called "line noise" and "mosquito noise" (don't ask, I don't see any mosquitoes there).

Video: "frame hopping" or "jitter": this is almost always caused by poor film splicing done by the creators of the show, where you see a single frame "jump", or sometimes it is a little worse where you see white fuzz somewhere at the edge of the frame. Often, most people don't notice it but it is definitely there. This "hopping" can be found in EVA, Key, Utena, Macross, Fushigi Yuugi, Battle Athletes, El Hazard the Alternate World, among others. Very often his is NOT the fault of the DVD maker, although there was one person that complained that frames in Sakura Diaries was hopping around 25% of the frame or more, and that turned out to be a player-specific problem where a setting change or driver update fixed the problem.

Audio: Phase Inversion - in stereo mode, one speaker is driven in an opposite direction from the other. This causes "surround" mode audio processors to send the voices to the rear speakers. In mono mode, you either get normal audio if you are just using the left or right channel, or very low to non-existent audio if there is any mixing going on. Noted releases: Slayers box set 1 Japanese audio, Rurouni Kenshin TV DVD 1 Japanese audio and the fourth episode of Sakura Wars. The Spanish language track of one of ADV's releases was noted somewhere but I don't know which one.
