Problem 1:At 10:35 in the time index, the video freezes and gradually becomes more and more pixelated as the audio plays normally
Workaround: Rewind/Fast Forward to 3:36 on the timer
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: Apex 500A
Severity: 2
Recalled: no
Last Updated: 2001 Oct 19

Thanks to "RPGuy" for reporting this.

Tenamonia Voyagers
Vendor: Bandai Entertainment
Problem 1:On some players, a subtitle sticks in episode 2 at about time index 18:36
Workaround: Rewind to that point and play.
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: Noticed on Mitsubishi DD6000; Panasonic A100, A310, Toshiba SD1200, some Sonys, maybe others.
Severity: 1

Thanks to "Danny", and others on the Anime on DVD Glitch Forum for posting & confirming this issue. It's not a major issue, it is a minor but very present nusiance.

Tenchi Ultimate Edition
Vendor: Pioneer
Problem 1:One of the discs has a tendency to not work in some players, and also there is a tendency that one of the discs was plain bad.
Workaround: If the disc is defective, first try cleaning it with an approved cleaning solution and a soft lint-free cloth.
Discs Affected: ?
Players Affected: Some PS2s, Philips DVD751 and some Apex models? It's been stated to work fine on some PS2s, Toshiba SD-3109, a Pioneer 333, 414, 505, 626D, it worked fine on my DVL-700. Most players should play the discs fine, I recommend exchanging the set as it might be a pressing problem and not a bug in the masters.
Severity: ?
Problem 2:The Japanese 5.1 audio track seems to be missing some dialog. "the scene im referring is at the end of episode 6 (we need tenchi), when azake and kamidake are talking about the mailman....my problem is that you cant hear ryoko and aeka arguing, you can only hear mihoshi, washu, and sasami speaking in the background..." - misha_ohki
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: all? not a player issue?
Severity: 3
Problem 3:The English stereo track seems to be reversed. Turns out the stereo channels are reversed for the dub track, at least for "The Night Before the Carnival. Most obvious scenes - 1) when Ayeka and Ryoko are on either side of Tenchi reading Noboyuki's horoscope books, their voices are on opposite sides to where they are sitting. When Ayeka is kicked off stage towards the right, her voice pans left; 2) later when Mihoshi comes in to answer the phone (which is on the right), she comes in from the left, but her voice comes in from the right while the phone rings on the left."
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: all?
Players Affected: all? not a player issue?
Severity: 1 or 2 - not that bad I guess as it took three years to get noticed.
Problem 4:A video glitch shows up in episode "We Love Tenchi" at 81:11, where we get a black frame and a white frame.

Problem reported by 'misha_ohki' and confirmed by 'Skywise'. Apparently the dialog is on the VHS but missing from the DVD and possibly from the LD release. Problem three posted by Paul Coddington.

Tenchi Universe volume 8
Vendor: Pioneer

Problem 1:In Tenchi Universe episode 24 the english audio track's left channel has a crackling noise. If you go to about 35 minutes into the disk you will notice it. This is apparently an unrepairable master problem.

Thanks to "gft" for the first report, Paul Coddington noted that the audio static is in the R2 release too.

Tenchi Muyo Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness / Monatsu no eve (Midsummer Night's Eve)
Vendor: Pioneer Anime
Problem 1:The alternate angle feature of the DVD format was used to show production sketches of relevant parts of the movie. Sometimes this brings up an 'angle' icon and sometimes it also affects the video of the main feature. Some players stutter at these points too. One interesting point is that the movie is totally progressive encoded except at the multi-angle segments, where they are totally interlaced.
Workaround: If you get an on-screen camera or angle icon, go to the player's menu and turn that icon display off. If the screen breaks up with big blocks or stutters, try hitting the chapter "back skip" button. Otherwise, there is probably no fix for the video quality drop.
Discs Affected: all? It really seems to be player conditional.
Players Affected: Apex AD-600A, Toshiba 2109 3109; others, it seems to be player conditional. I haven't noticed any drop in quality when I watched this feature.
Severity: 1
Nitpick 1: The multi-angle segments aren't set up very well, the second angle is only used to display a sketch, and that sketch is at the end of the segment. I personally believe that the sketches should have been put into the menu.
Workaround: chapter skip to the end of the segment and rewind a bit.

Tokyo Babylon
Vendor: Central Park Media, sublicended to Nutech / DVD Ltd.
Problem 1: There are audio clicks and pops in the second episode, in the Japanese audio only. Also, scene transitions tend to be very artifacted for a frame or two.
Workaround: Watch the dub, otherwise there is no workaround.
Discs Affected: Nutech version
Players Affected: all?
Recalled: ?
Severity: 2
Problem 2:Badly mistimed subtitles
Workaround: Buy the version that wasn't made by Nutech.
Discs Affected: Nutech version
Players Affected: all?
Recalled: No, but CPM did redo this DVD in a rerelease under their own name.
Severity: 3 for sub watchers
Recalled: ?
Thanks to Musicman at the Anime on DVD forum for the heads-up. I noticed this problem some time back. Chris Beveridge describes it in his
review. This is apparently an old DVD Ltd sublicence which CPM has no control over, I doubt emails to CPM will have much effect. Heck, their previous problems with sublicences didn't keep them from sublicencing even more titles.

It's been discussed before, but AoD forum member "Aino Mitsukai" pointed the subtitle timing problems. Unfortunately, there is no trade-in program.

Trigun volumes 1-3
Vendor: Pioneer Entertainment, USA
Problems: significant rainbows, the severity is dependent on setup.
Workaround: If you are using a TV, turn your sharpness down as much as possible. This is recommended as part of the TV calibration procedure anyways.

If this issue bugs you, please write Pioneer and beg them to use better masters and / or better comb filters or whatever it takes to fix the problem. These rainbow problems have gotten out of hand.

Twelve Kingdoms

Vendor: Media Blasters
DVD Authoring:
Problem 1:The episodes on this DVD is effectively mono in both languages when the Japanese DVD is fully stereo. The package does not claim it has stereo audio. The disc still works fine and by many accounts the quality of the Japanese audio is still good, just lacking the directionality it could have had with the original stereo track.
Workaround: none
Discs Affected: volume 1
Players Affected:
Severity: low to medium.
Recalled: no, but fixed discs are available. Some have claimed that Media Blasters will swap them at conventions, and the fixed discs are hitting retail, but has been no word regarding a proper recall.

Thanks to "arne" and "ehchan" for bringing this up. If you would like Media Blasters to licence better features and the best sound tracks, please email them concerning this.

Tylor, The Irresponsible Captain
Vendor: The Right Stuf Inc.
DVD Authoring: Little Lion Studios, Inc.
Problem 1:Episode 23 seems to be missing about 5 minutes and 45 seconds of animation.
Workaround: none?
Discs Affected: every copy of Volume 4?
Players Affected: all?
Severity: 3-4
Problem 2:Episode 14 has subs that don't seem to be colored in, Title 7, chapter 2, time index 8:42. Click here to see what it looks like.
Workaround: none?
Discs Affected: every copy of Volume 2?
Players Affected: all?
Severity: 1, IMO no replacement needed unless a bigger problem pops up.
Studio Comment: The sub color is indeed painted in according to the authoring program, but as the color was slightly invalid players rejected it.
Problem 3:With the "asynchronous subs, where part of the sub is replaced or added to an existing sub, a one frame blink appears. This is similar to a problem that haunted AnimEigo with the first BGC set.
Workaround: none?
Discs Affected: all
Players Affected: all
Severity: 1-2, IMO no replacement needed unless a bigger problem pops up.
Studio Comment: The authoring system needs to be updated to fix the problem on future discs. The OAVs will not exhibit them because they don't have "async" subtitles.
Recalled: yes on volume 4 (problem 1), an exchange program has been announced, those that directly ordered through TRSI need to only wait for them to send it to you. More details later.
Last Updated: 3/24/2001

Contrary to rumors, DVD Ltd / NuTech seem to have nothing to do with the authoring of this set. I'm willing to accept evidence to the contrary, but I haven't found any. I found Little Lion credited at the very end of each DVD.

"filatalian" reported issue #1, with many confirming it, "Kulgan" reported issue #2, I checked it out and made the screen capture.

Update [2001/4/3]: The way to tell if you have the fixed version of volume 4. "The artwork on the bad Tylor #4 has a sketch of the Empress Azalyn. The upcoming corrected version will have both her and a sketch of Tylor himself." - a quote from the news page of Anime on DVD. The fixed DVD is not yet pressed. You can find a mirrored copy here.

Update [2001/5/2]:To identify the "fixed" version of the DVD:
You can tell the "new" disc from the "old" disc by the characters on the silkscreen. The "new" disc has Tylor on the right, whereas the old disc does not have Tylor on it at all.

New shipments of the DVD set and disc will have a sticker saying "13+" on them, so that they can be easily identified. Old sets do not have this sticker.

Thanks to Shawne Kleckner, President of TRSI, for both a speedy resolution and for making the fixed version easily identifiable without having to open the package or play the DVD.
